We all know it's that time of year where we start thinking about setting goals for the new year... I say thinking and that's about as far as some of us get...
It's a great time to have a look at what you want to achieve in the next year. I also, like to you use it as a time to look back at what I have achieved this year. Thinking of highlights or achievements from the year, then gives you the motivation to get some goals in mind. Looking back on how much you have achieved, is the fuel for your future.
For 2018 I said I would run a half marathon... did I do it?... no. This was because I never actually wanted to do it. It was a goal I set myself but didn't plan for it. I enjoy running shorter distances, so it was an extreme goal to set.
It's no good for your mindset if you have set a goal and you don't achieve it. Choose things that you really want to achieve or you would like to do. Something you enjoy or there is a purpose to it, to help with a long term goal or your future. You have got to have that motivation, to help you achieve what you really want.
I look at what I love and what I would like to happen in the future, then break it down into steps and smaller goals.
Last year I wanted to achieve a Yoga arm balance- crow pose (see picture). Something I have wanted for years. I broke it down, I didn't stress or rush, I built up the strength and confidence and then sooner or later I had smashed my goal! I wanted it and I did it. The half marathon however, I never really wanted to do it, so I didn't...
Have a think... write it down. It can be one thing or many. You might not be sure or you might be happy as you are, then work on maintaining that.
The main thing is to find your motivation to achieve what you want. Keep reminding yourself of what you are going for. Break it down, don't rush. Respect yourself- everyone has their ups and their downs. Listen to yourself. Use other peoples knowledge and guidance. Do more of what you love and enjoy the journey...
